Catching the wave of social sustainability – Part 1

Why occupational safety, health and wellbeing is at the foundation of socially sustainable business

Sustainability in business has to some extent become synonymous with measuring and monitoring environmental impacts on the planet. While this is important, it is equally vital to engage with the social aspect of sustainability – the idea that looking after people today will enable them, and the organisations for whom they work, to thrive tomorrow.

Nothing radical or unprecedented is required from OSH practitioners to contribute to socially sustainable business,. The core principles of the profession are as valid as they ever have been. However, a better understanding of the somewhat undervalued and untapped connection between healthy, safe and satisfied workers and stable, resilient businesses is needed. The realisation of this by well-informed OSH practitioners can be a catalyst for deep-rooted change in the way business is conducted.

The first webinar in the Catch the Wave series considers the role and the potential of OSH in the social sustainability discussion. Host Louise Hosking, President of IOSH, will be joined on the panel by Simon Head of Fujitsu, Jessica Verdon of Multiplex and Professor Karina Nielsen of Sheffield University Management School.

The Catch the Wave campaign from IOSH will provide practical insights into the wide-reaching potential that good occupational health and safety possesses, and how it can lead to better outcomes and impacts for workers globally.
